Flat brim fitted caps need two connected approvals: the fit of each intended size and the silhouette of the finished range. A reference cap can establish the look, but one sample cannot show how every size will sit on its wearer.
Start with the Fitted Cap Sizing and Buying Guide for the size system and order brief. Then use a consistent review method to compare crown, visor and decoration across the size set.
Describe the silhouette independently of the size label
State the intended crown depth, front structure and visor profile. Include front, side and rear views of the accepted reference. A fitted label describes the size arrangement; it does not communicate every part of the cap’s shape.
For a branded retail example, New Era’s 59FIFTY silhouette guide presents its own fitted, flat-visor style. Use outside references to communicate design direction, then establish the actual measurements and construction for your custom order.

Choose a reference size and identify the review range
Record which size controls the initial development sample. List the remaining sizes and agree which ones need physical review. Include the ends of the range so the comparison does not rely only on the middle size.
Keep the size label, intended wearer measurements and finished-cap measurement method separate in the records. Check each sample against the specification for that size, not against an assumption that all parts should be identical across the range.
Compare the visor with the crown on each size
Review visor projection, width, edge outline and attachment from the agreed viewpoints. Ask the sample team to identify whether the proposed visor specification is shared across sizes or changes. Record that decision rather than assuming a universal grading rule.
Look at the cap worn in the intended position as well as resting on a table. Check whether the front appears balanced with the visor and whether the side view matches the design direction. A satisfactory circumference does not settle those visual questions.
Define the delivered brim profile
State that the cap should arrive with the approved flat profile if that is the intended presentation. Keep any requested curve or edge shape in the sample record. Do not leave the supplied condition dependent on how a wearer might reshape the brim later.
Record top fabric, underbrim fabric, insert reference where specified, stitching and any contrast edge. For more visor-detail prompts, the flat visor design guide covers the brim itself; its snapback closure discussion does not replace this fitted size-set review.
Check decoration placement across the approved sizes
Identify the point from which a logo position is measured. Review the artwork at the actual finished size on the intended panel construction. Check the relationship between the graphic, crown seam and visor attachment.
If logo dimensions or placement vary by cap size, list the versions explicitly. Where they remain shared, verify that choice on the reviewed samples. Keep the approved artwork revision and color combination connected to each relevant item.
Use a size-set silhouette worksheet
| Review point | What to record |
|---|---|
| Size identity | Label, specification revision and sample reference. |
| Finished fit | Defined measurement method and wearer-review outcome. |
| Crown profile | Depth, front structure, panel balance and intended worn position. |
| Visor relationship | Projection, width, outline and attachment on that size. |
| Artwork | Finished dimensions, placement reference and any size-specific version. |
| Packing result | Approved arrangement and appearance after unpacking. |
| Approval status | Accepted points, open changes and the sizes each decision covers. |
Recheck the silhouette after packing
Review the proposed carton arrangement using the actual cap shape. Compare the crown and visor after unpacking with the accepted reference. Check any sticker, tag or protective insert at the same time.
Keep packing instructions with the size and item breakdown. If the order uses mixed-size cartons, ensure the labels and packing list identify the contents so the receiver can reconcile quantities without opening every cap’s internal label.
Common flat-brim fitted questions
Should every size use exactly the same visor?
Ask the sample team to identify the proposed construction, then assess the finished proportions across the agreed size set. Record the accepted specification for each size.
Does “fitted” always mean a flat brim?
Specify the brim profile separately. The size system and the delivered visor shape are different parts of the product brief.
Can an approved middle size cover the whole order?
Agree the scope of the size-set review and identify the sizes actually checked. Keep any remaining approval requirements visible before committing the full assortment.
